Southern Super Series Bringing ASA Brand Back To Montgomery
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
When the Southern Super Series rolls into Montgomery Motor Speedway on (Rescheduled for April 29) for the “Rumble By The River,” a unique combination of “old” and “new” will be on full display.
The Southern Super Series this year is sanctioned by the American Speed Association, the first time the Florida based series has had an overarching sanctioning body tied to the tour. And while the 2023 visit will be the 17th Southern Super Series stop at Montgomery, it will mark the return of the ASA Brand for the first time since 2001.
“The ASA National Tour saw big changes at the turn of the century,” commented Mark Gundrum, an employee of the original American Speed Association who is working with the “new” ASA. “The Vortec Engine program, and the BFGoodrich Tire sponsorship helped take the series out of the Midwest, and to many new venues outside of the traditional ASA stronghold region.”
Indeed. Beginning in the year 2000, The ASA Racing Series ran a 20 race schedule at 20 different tracks, in as many as 18 different states. Trips to North Carolina, Virginia, and California changed the make up of the once regional tour, including a pair of stops in Alabama at Montgomery in 2000 and 2001.
“The national and international corporate sponsors that ASA partnered with required a more national footprint,” Gundrum continued. While ASA had visited many track in many states prior to 2000, the next couple of years saw a broad expansion of the traditional geography.”
Mike Miller, the Wisconsin short track ace who relocated to Georgia, won the first ASA Racing Series event at Montgomery on May 7, 2000. 46 drivers were on the entry list for the “Actionline 300,” including Larry Foyt, son of AJ Fort; Paul Dallenbach, brother of NASCAR Cup Series driver Wally Dallenbach; David Bonnett- son of NASCAR Cup Series driver Neil Bonnett.
The series returned one year later, and three-time ASA National Champion Kevin Cywinski was victorious, ahead of Miller and Johnny Sauter, who went on to win the 2001 ASA National Championship.
