Alabama 200 recap from Speed 51

Good afternoon and welcome to Speed51’s Trackside Now coverage of the Alabama 200 at Montgomery Motor Speedway in Alabama.

It is a balmy 94 degrees just west of Alabama’s capital city. The heat index is a scorching 106. It will be a very warm day for all drivers, teams and fans.

There is a small threat of passing thunderstorms this afternoon. Such is life in the Deep South in summertime.

The fans are currently milling around on the front stretch gathering autographs from some of their favorite Super Late Model and Modified drivers.

Cole Anderson knocked out the competition in June’s Rumble By The River 125 Southern Super Series event. Anderson passed Kyle Grissom with 52 laps to go in the race, scoring his first Southern Super Series win.

Grill is the only former Alabama 200 winner in the field today. However, Chandler Smith’s crew chief, Ricky Turner, is looking for a fourth straight win in Montgomery’s marquee event.

The 82 of Blake Wilson has pulled on pit road, his car was smoking just before he came down.

The 91 of Jim Wall currently getting black flagged because his bumper is dragging the racetrack.

Lap 25, the top 3 now seperated by a few car lengths as lapped traffic slowed up the leaders.

CAUTION: Lap 27, Skyler Strength spins in front of the leaders. All drivers were able to avoid.

GREEN FLAG: Lap 27, Crawford slows on the start and now slowing on the backstretch. Morman has the lead, Crocker into second.

CAUTION: Henry Wade spins out and almost collects a few drivers but everyone came out unscathed. Lap 29.

GREEN FLAG: Lap 29, Morman away with the lead, Letson in second, Crocker in third.

The new leader is the 131 of Letson, who was the fastest qualifier. Second is Crocker, Hamrac in third, the R7 of Worsham in fourth, and Augie Grill in fifth on lap 31.

GREEN FLAG: Lap 31, Letson gets out with the lead, Crocker holds on to second over a hard charging Hamrac.

Top four are single file and spread out, Augie Grill holding off the rest of the field that is two by two on his back bumper on lap 35.

CAUTION: Henry Wade spins down the front stretch, Skyler Strength’s throttle hangs and he finally comes to a rest on the bottom of turn one. Both drivers are okay. Lap 36.

Skyler Strength’s throttle hung after making contact with Wade and he was just along for the ride after finally parking against the inside wall of turn one.

Jason Morman (33), your early race leader, came down pit road under caution.

The decison has been made to start counting the first three laps under caution to try to speed this race along.

GREEN FLAG: Lap 36, battle for the lead off of turn two with Letson and Crocker, Letson reclaims the lead back to the stripe.

Hamrac now has the second position on lap 39.

Top four break away from the field. Letson, Hamrac, Crocker, and Worsham. Grill 15 car lengths back in fifth.

Lap 43, Hamrac now charging for the lead on Letson.

Hamrac looks to the inside off turn two, falls back single file. Letson still leading on lap 44.

Letson now holding a 3-4 car length lead on Hamrac, then it’s another 6 car lengths back to Crocker in third. Lap 47.

Grill trying to hold off Morman for fifth as he charges back through the field. Morman now able to get by Grill.

CAUTION: Rocky Rogers spins by himself in turns three and four. Possibly has a tire down.

Lap 8: Anderson goes by Jones as well. Jones now kicked back to fifth.

Lap 9: Ruston trying to recover from the early mistake. she is all over Jones for the fifth spot.

Lap 12: Wilson continues to stretch his lead over Knox.

Lap 15: Roderick and Anderson ride third and fourth. They seem to be catching Knox.

Lap 17: Wilson leads by nearly a full straightaway over Knox.

Lap 19: Give Ruston the fifth spot. Jones drops to sixth.

Lap 20: Moore and Grill are next to challenge for Jones.

Lap 27: McCallum brings his car to pit road. He knicked the wall a few laps back.

Lap 30: Wilson’s lead is nearly five seconds over Roderick.

Lap 32: Behind the top five, Jones leads Moore and Augie Grill. The rest of the field is way back.

Lap 34: There are seven cars directly in front of Wilson. He will try to put a lap on Davidson, Scott, Houff and Purdy very shortly.

Lap 37: Chandler Smith gets by Plott for 8th. He knows Wilson is coming fast.

Lap 39: Wilson in heavy lap traffic. They go three wide in turn three right in front of the leader.

Lap 40: Wilson picks his way past Houff.

Lap 41: Houff to pit road with an apparent engine issue.

Lap 42: Wilson laps past Scott and Davidson. Next up for DW is Plott and Boyett.

Lap 44: The lapped traffic has allowed Roderick to shave more than two seconds off Wilson’s lead.

Lap 52: Smith shoots way up the tack in turn one. Wilson dives under to put him down a lap.

Lap 53: Just nine cars remain on the lead lap. Next to be lapped by Wilson is Chase Purdy.

Lap 55: Once Wilson shook free of the lap traffic, he stretch his lead back to more than four seconds over Roderick.

Lap 56: Roderick stuck behind Davidson and Plott with no place to go. Wilson continues to pull away.

Lap 57: Anderson is right behind Roderick, with Ruston trailing by about 8 car lengths.

Lap 61: Wilson goes by Purdy. Now just eight cars on the lead lap.

Lap 65: Grill is the next in line to get lapped by Wilson, however he has a straightaway lead over the 2.

Lap 67: Roderick finally breaks free of the traffic. He has a decently clean stretch of track in front of him. We will see if he can do anything with Wilson.

Lap 74: Slowly but surely, Ruston is reeling in Anderson for third.

Lap 76: Grill gets around Fredrick Moore. Wilson closing on both.

Lap 78: Wilson was almost half a second faster than anyone that last time. He is rolling.

Lap 80: Ruston all over Anderson for third. That’s the best battle on the track.

Lap 82: Ruston runnning the high line trying to find a way past Anderson.

Lap 83: Ruston dives under Anderson to get the spot. Nice little cross over move.

Lap 84: Knox to pit road, with the hood off.

Lap 85: Wilson laps past Moore. Grill now the last car on the lead lap.

Lap 87: Knox returns to the track, three laps down.

Lap 88: Wilson catching Grill each and every corner.

Lap 90: Wilson stalking Grill to put him down a lap.

Lap 91: Big wiggle from Wilson off the corner. Grill stays alive for now.

Lap 93: Wilson under Augie. But Grill will not give up the spot.

Lap 95: Grill doing everything he can to stay on the lead lap, as the halfway mark is approaching.

Lap 97: Grill hanging tough on the outside, but Wilson gets by to put him down a lap.

Lap 99: Grill now battling with Purdy to be the first car one lap down.

YELLOW: Jones brings out the first caution of the day.

Word from race director Dan Spence is that this will serve as the competition caution. This caution came at exactly 100 complete.

The free pass car is the 97 of Chase Purdy. He runs in fifth.

Lap 103: Roderick, Ruston and Anderson ride in formation. Wilson has already checked out on the field.

Lap 106: Grill gets by Anderson on track, but the 112 is a lap down.

The accident started when Boyett and Grll got together on the front straight. Grill got turned in to the outside wall, got two wheels off the ground for a moment. Anderson and Scott spun to avoid the wreck, but made contact with the inside wall.

Montgomery Motor Speedway is back in action for the “Show me the Money 150 Hunt for the BEAR 2.0 Champions weekend September 24th and 25th

The track will hold open practice on Friday the 23rd with a drivers appreciation party after the practice . Saturday the track will feature the final races of the year for Interstate batteries Late Model Sportsman, Street Stocks and Modified Minis plus qualifying for the Pro Late Model Show me the Money Hunt for the Bear 150.

Sunday we will hold a last chance race if needed plus a 15 lap Buzz car /Hot Shot race and then the Hunt for the bear 150 featuring the “Show me the Money” pro Late Models presented by Blacksheep woodlands.
