May 14, 2018 Montgomery, Alabama: Another wild, fast weekend of racing took place at historic Montgomery Motor Speedway Saturday, May 12, with four divisions running – Cup Lites, Coca-Cola Street Stocks, Road Runners, and the Blacksheep Woodlands Late Model Sportsman.
The evenings events were kicked off with 20 laps by the Cup Lites. With a tight line to the green flag of lap one, excitement was already in the air with the 1200 cc engines running three-wide out of lap 2. By lap 4, there was a heated battle for first place between the #94 Jason Fowler and the #86 of David Wood, with #94 eventually surging to the lead. Closing in on lap 7, the top three cars were the #94 Fowler,#8 Spencer Bragg, and #3 Adam Salter, with the field spreading apart. The 94 car lost a chain on lap 11, which brought out the caution upon the completion of lap 12. The 94 returned from pit road with 1 lap to go before the restart, with the Bragg leading the pack to the green flag restart. Salter and Bragg went door-to-door for many laps before the #3 clambered to the front. In a last effort attempt on the final lap, out of turn 4 #8 Bragg dove to the inside to try and pass Salters machine, but came up just short of a victory. The top three were 3, 8, and 1, respectively in first, second, and third.

Upon completion of the Cup Lites race, fans were treated to an on-track autograph session.

The action didn’t stop there, as the next class to race was the Coca-Cola Street Stocks for 66 laps. Another tight drive to the green flag and trouble ensued out of turn 2 with the #4 of Jason Sanford spinning, causing the #51 of 2017 Rookie of the year and current points leader Trey Grimes to wiggle out of the pack as well – neither of the cars sustained damage. Initiating a complete restart, the #6 car of 2016 and 2017 Track Champion Charles Davis lead the pack to green, with a fight for second between the JC Cleckler #5 and Sanford #4. By lap 5, the top four cars – 6, 4, 5, and 51 – had separated from the rest of the field. Suddenly, the hood of Davey Lynn #80g flies up and is clinging to the car with a single hood pin, causing him a trip down pit road. Smoke begins to pour out of the 51, leading to a drop of the yellow flag on lap 6. Davis #6 lead the restart again, with a fight for first between the #6 and #4. The #33of Terry Grimes gets sideways with the #1 Ford of Buddy Welch’s car, drawing a caution and putting the #51 a lap down. A sudden burst of speed from the 51, as he floats through the field in an effort to regain the lap he lost. On lap 21, the #33 spins out once again, drawing the caution. During the caution, the cars go for a fuel stop that lasts three laps. The #51 received the lucky dog, placing him in the fourth position. The #6 car once again led the restart, with a quick skirmish for first on lap 22 with the Davis and Sanford. On a mission, by lap 30 the #51 car was hawking down the #6 to seize the lead. By lap 35, a huge gap has developed between the first place of 6 and second of 51 and the third of 4. Caution on lap 45 with the #33 spinning out for the third time, unassisted, causing his dismissal from the race. The #51 begins to smoke again and is discovered to have an oil leak. After a quick trip down pit road, the #51 returns the track. By lap 50, half of the field is gone and the 51 finally goes in to pit road, unable to repeat their victory from the previous Street Stock race at MMS. By the end of the 66 laps, Charles Davis #6 emerged victorious, followed by the Sanford #4 in second and JC Cleckler #5 in third.

The next class to run for 15 laps were the Road Runners. With only 4 cars in the race, the cars were still able to electrify the crowd going three wide by lap 4. Jason Kendrick #3 and Eugene Bell #33 battled the entire race for the lead, with the #3 car winning out. The #07 of Ronald Roeting had a good run placing 3rd and New competitor David Alford brought his #12 Crown Vic home in 4th.

The final event of the night was the BlackSheep Woodlands Late Model Sportsman, running 66 laps. The green flag flashed and the #18 of Dave Mader III surged to the lead. Jeff Dawkins in the Wesley’s Karaoke #2 car, while starting in the 6th position (Due to his victory on April 7th) quickly moved through the field. By lap 6, The lapping had started as the #18 of Mader III was on a roll. Dawkins #2 was rolling his way to the front as he worked the #21 Furrow on lap 20, The #2 car snags the position on lap 21, taking the lead of the pack by lap 22. At lap 25, the Dawkins was experiencing some difficulty navigating through lapped traffic. By lap 33, the field had completely spread out. At lap 43, a yellow flag was drawn out for issues with the 1x car. On the restart of lap 44, there were position changes with Mader III moving to 3rd and the #21 falling to 4th. By the end of the 66 laps, in first place was Dawkins #2, second was the Mader III #18, and third was the #8x of Aidan Eldridge with a strong run.

Montgomery Motor Speedway will be back in action Saturday May 26th for the Memorial 100 Presented by Haynes Life Flight and Ambulance service featuring the “Show me the MONEY” Pro late Models, Twin 30 lap features for the Blacksheep Woodlands Late Model Sportsman and a 30-lap feature for the Coca Cola Street Stocks. The fun and excitement continue as we will also have a big wheel race for the kids and fans will have the opportunity to meet NASCAR legends Jody Ridley and Rex White. Tickets are $15 for adults $10 for seniors and Military $5 kids 6-12 5 and under are always free. Gates open at 5 Budweiser Qualifying at 6 and racing at 7.
