#2 for Trey… #1 for #2

April 9, 2018 Montgomery, Al 36108: It takes a strong will and love for racing to stare down the cold temps and winds this past Saturday night. For those that did brave the elements they were treated to some exciting racing. The night consisted of a 40 lap Coca-Cola Street Stock race … a 75 lap Late model Sportsman race that awarded one lucky fan with $100 and a picture with the Late Model Sportsman race winner, A Burn-Out Contest and a School Bus race.

Budweiser qualifying saw a new driver winning his first Fast Time Pole award. Trey Grimes clocked a lap of 22.939 Followed closely by Brian “Bubba” Hutchinson #38 at 22.992.Grabbing the third spot was Billy Joe Austin wheeling the Conwood Services #51a to a lap of 23.007.

Late Model Sportsman got their shot at 2 laps on the historic oval. Bill Bethea III clocked his second lap at 20.853 edging out #88 Bobby Reuse by .029 seconds.   #2 Jeff Dawkins rounded out the top 3With a time of 20.927.

The Burnout contest was won by Jason “Shaggy” Furrow from Thomasville Alabama lighting up his Chevrolet Corvette to the delight of the loyal crowd.

#21 Jason Furrow

Coca Cola Street stocks rolled out 11 strong and the battle between the #17 of Chance Atkins and the #51 of Trey Grimes was epic. The #17 took the lead on the drop of the green flag and ran very strong. Caution flew early as the #2 went for a spin and the #38 and #5 made contact sending both to the rear on lap #1. The #74 of Devin Gore and the #2 of Greg Foley had short nights as both left the track on lap #2. Will Smith piloting his new Street Stock ride although he had some first race bugs but completed 28 laps before retiring the #7 machine.

Lap 33 saw the big hit of the race as Chance Atkins was putting the pressure on Grimes #51 the car hit a oil or wet spot and spun into the inside wall ending his night and possibly his season as the damage was significant. Cautions seemed to come in bunches as the yellow was thrown on lap 34 for a spin and contact between the #4 of Jason Sanford, the #80 davey Lynn and #38 Hutchinson.

At Lap 40 it was #51 Trey Grimes with his 2nd win of 2018, followed by J.C. Cleckler#5 who had worked his way back through the field. Rounding out the top 3 was Brian Hutchinson #38.

As the Late Model Sportsman were strapping in the precipitation started… forcing track officials to change up a bit and run the School Bus race next to help dry the track and keep things moving along. Hot Shoe and NEWLY engaged Caution truck driver Don Wilson Brought the #21 Wood Bros bus into victory lane. Don and his beautiful Bride were married on Sunday and it’s reported he took his trophy on his honeymoon.

Montgomery Motor Speedway, It’s fans, Racers and staff would like to congratulate Don and Diane on their recent nuptials.

Once the track was dry it was time for the Blacksheep Woodlands Late Model Sportsman 75 lap event. The Action was hot as Jeff Dawkins led the field to green. Before the race went green the #5 car of Travis Cleckler slung a belt off and his crew work feverishly to get his car back in the race. Unfortunately, it seemed the damage was done as the #5 blew up at the start of the race. Tight racing through out the field led to an incident on lap 14 between the #7 of Caton and the #20 of Bethea III resulting in hard contact for Bethea.

The #18 of Dave Mader III made repeated attempts to grab the lead from #2 Dawkins but the Tallassee Alabama driver hit his marks and drove a textbook race bringing the Wesley’s Karaoke bar / Hughs Flooring design Ford to victory lane.
