Some new faces in Victory Lane on Opening Night

March 26, 2018: Montgomery, Al: When the local divisions hit the track, the fans are in for a good show. Saturday night Montgomery Motor Speedway had 4 divisions on the track.

First event featured the mini Modifieds competing for 20 laps. New cars and some old faces took to the track. Fast time was set by Jeremy Williams from Birmingham, Al. in the second practice session. Williams rolled a 3 in opening ceremonies putting the VW Bug of Dustin Knowles on the pole for the race. At the drop of the green flag the VW of Knowles took the lead but the #83 of Williams, #8 Austin Franklin and Jacob Hill were on the hunt to the front. Kassey Rogers driving the Tommy Beavers #14 started 7th and was moving her way up also. on lap 2 the #83 of Williams and the #19 Jacob hill got together in turn 2 ending both of their nights. lap 6 saw a mechanical issue bite Rogers and sent her to the pits. Ashley Bridgemon #2 started 6th and picked up a couple of spots to finish 4th. Bubba Deaton also had some mechanical issues that ended his run early. lap 19 saw the #8 of Franklin make one last effort to catch the #64 of Knowles but he couldn’t make the pass and had to settle for second. Dustin Knowles took the checkered in the VW Bug to the crowds delight

Blacksheep woodland Late model sportsman hit the track next after Bill Bethea III set fast time in Budweiser qualifying and rolled a 3 putting Jason Furrow #21 and Dennis Reno Jr on the front row. The first turn was wild as Furrow washed up the track and made contact with Reno. Giving Bethea the opportunity to grab the lead. Bethea has had some tough luck bringing home the checkered in the past and he wasn’t going to miss this opportunity. Justin Caton #7 tried to work his way up but the car got tighter the longer the race went on. In the end it was the #20 of Bethea taking the hardware home.

The Coca Cola Street Stocks have always been a fan favorite at MMS. The field was strong with 13 cars rolling in the gate. Fast time in Budweiser qualifying was Deatsville’s Joe Bethea Jr. followed closely by #17 Chance Adkins and #51 Trey Grimes.

Bethea rolled a 3 in opening ceremonies which put 2017 Rookie of the year Trey Grimes on the pole. Right off the line the #17 had mechanical issues and retired his ride on lap 4. The opening night blues continued as the #81f Keith Grace left the track on lap 9 followed by Joe Bethea jr on lap 12. The race was on for the top position as Trey Grimes got the first win of the year followed by JC Cleckler #5 and Kameron Wesenberg #32.

2018 will see a new division competing at MMS. The RoadRunner class a Pure stock division will be competing and will give an inexpensive racing class for beginners and those racers on a limited budget. . The class is also ran at south Alabama speedway and will give those competitors a different track to show off their rides. 7 cars from the south made the trek to MMS and hit the track as the last feature of the evening. Jason Kendrick coming off his win at the 42nd annual Rattler found himself in victory lane. all 7 cars completed the 20 lap event and gave the MMS fans a  look at this new division. New rides are under construction now and we should see some newer Crown Victorias joining the divisions.

Montgomery Motor Speedway returns to action on Saturday April 7th for the Blacksheep woodlands Late model  sportsman 75. Fans will also witness a 40 lap Coca Cola Street Stock race, School Bus race and a Burnout contest paying $150 to the street car judged to do the best Burnout. Tickets are only $10 for adults $8 for seniors and Military $5 kids 6-12 …5 and under are always Free.
