Big Laps … Big Fun for the Biggest weekend in Racing !!!

June 29, 2016 Montgomery, Al: The Biggest races in motorsports happen on Memorial Weekend and race fans around the world know it. F-1 races at Monaco, Indy cars at the Indianapolis 500, NASCAR at the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte and the racing action at Montgomery Motor Speedway. The weekend started with 23 Pro Late Model cars showing up for the test session Friday Night. Saturday saw a total of 33 cars trying to make the 32 starting spots for the “Show me the Money 100”. The weekend also featured a 64 lap Street Stock race and the Modified Mini division.

Budweiser qualifying started with the Street Stock division. Fast time was set by Dwayne Wesenberg #31 at 23.270 followed by Charles Davis #6 23.373 then Josh Wilson clocked a lap of 23.443 for the 3rd position. 4th spot was held by Michael Joiner with a time of 23.469 and Bubba Hutchinson finished off the top 5 with a time of 23.485. During opening ceremonies Wesenberg rolled a 5 setting the field for the 64 lap contest.

Pro Late Models were up next as 32 cars tried for their best 2 laps. The top 10 cars were separated by less than a third of a second. The other interesting fact was that 7 out of the top 8 drivers made the trip from Georgia to race at the Historic track. The 8th was Derek Scott Jr who came from Texas. When the smoke cleared it was the Ronnie Sanders car sponsored by Pit Boxes.com Casey Roderick with a fast time of 19.038. Jordan McCallum #22 was second at 19.127 and Young Gun Chandler Smith #26 was 3rd at 19.140

Fans were curious why the 64 lap race? The track was first opened in 1953 thus the 64th year of existence. The Street Stock feature started with veteran #24 David Wood on the point and the #38 of Hutchinson to his outside. The #12 of Josh Wilson was not able to make the feature due to mechanical issues. The first caution flew on lap 4 as #7 Will Smith made contact with the turn 3 wall. Great racing was happening all over the track as drivers tried to conserve their tires but also fought for positions. Lap 16 saw the second caution of the night as Davey Lynn #80 tapped the wall coming out of turn 4 ending his night just a few laps later. Wood #24 held the top spot for 22 laps until Charles Davis #6 took the point position and control of the event. But the battle was not over as #31 Wesenberg challenged Davis numerous times for the top spot. Fans were excited to see Bubba Nesbitt #88 back on the track after a big crash a month ago. Nesbitt and his team worked long hours to get the #88 back to the track for this big event. Once the checkers flew it was Charles Davis from Lapine, Alabama sponsored by Browder Veneer works, Sharon Kay detail Cleaner, Central Alabama Fluid Power, Showtime Graphics and Interstate batteries taking the win and the $1000 check. Blacksheep Woodlands put up extra money for the race and awarded $200 extra to the winner making his payday $1200. 2nd place was Dwayne Wesenberg #31and 3rd was David Wood #24 they each got an extra $100 from Blacksheep Woodlands.

The Pro Late Model feature lined up and hit the track with a roar. 32 cars took the green and were rolling around the ½ mile speedway at a blistering pace. The stage was set for a long green flag run when on lap 9 #2 of Luke Christain got loose coming off turn 4 and was clipped by #59 Terry Meyers and the #51 of Perry Patino slid into Christian leaving both cars heavily damaged. On the restart #23 Dalton Grindle gets loose and a big pile up occurs going into turn 1. Cars involved are the #23, #33, #02, #181, #9, #55r. Lap 12 saw a tough break for the #4 car of Kason Plott who had to pit for a flat right front putting the young driver multiple laps down. Plott driving in his first pro Late model race kept his cool and kept digging the entire race finishing 6th on the lead lap. The lucky dog played to his favor and gave the Georgia driver a strong finish in his Pro Late Model debut. The next caution was displayed on lap 16 when contact between the #22m McCallum  and #30m Moore sent the #30 spinning gathering the #26 of Chandler Smith and the #114 of Sterling Marlin. Smith was able to continue but the incident ended the night for the Tennessee driver Marlin. Cautions were the name of the game as flagman John Midkiff had to display it on numerous occasions.

The quality of racing was evident as a show was put on by veterans #21 Justin South and Bobby Knox Jr as they battled for numerous laps. Knox who had to come from the back of the field worked his way to contend for the top spot. Young talent was also present as #26c Chandler Smith and #01 Derek Scott Jr. raced each other side by side with no contact. Other notables were Kason Plott who rebounded from multiple laps down, #7 Taylor Stricklin who came back after an earlier spin to finish 7th Brandon Herbert Survived for 8th and Jason Furrow #21 who worked his way around some of the melee to finish a strong 9th. The Leader board had #10s leading laps 1-7, #24 Tullis 8,9 , #10s of Senter 9-15 #01 of Scott 16-21, #24 Tullis 22-27 #18 Roderick 28-100
