Twin 50’s Rock, Roll and Wrecks

May 1st, 2016 Montgomery Al: As the year of the “Late Models” unfolds fans were treated to a spectacular show this past Saturday night as 36 Pro Late Models wedged into Montgomery Motor Speedway for round 2 and 3 of the “Show me the Money” twin 50’s night. Action was stellar in all divisions but the Late Models were in the spotlight.

Budweiser Qualifying was first on the docket as 36 cars lined up for their 2 best laps early fast time was set by Casey Roderick #18 with a lap of 19.327 but was soon bested by #112 Augie Grills time of 19.132. That time held till the 35th car in line took to the track and layed down a lap of 19.092 putting 2 time Daytona winner Sterling Marlin as winner of the Budweiser Fast time Pole Award.

Next up for qualifying was the Interstate Batteries Late Model Sportsman. Dave Mader III clocked a time of 21.491 Followed by #88 piloted by fill in driver and 2015 Champion Joe Hudson with a time of 21.621 followed closely by #21 Jason Furrow at 21.681. The time of Hudson was not allowed as Roger Reuse showed up in time for the feature and had to start at the tail end of the grid. Mader rolled a 5 during opening ceremonies and the field was set.

The Late Model Sportsman started with “Bad” Brad Edwards on the pole and Justin Caton #7 outside. Jason Furrow quickly moved into the #2 position as Caton dropped back as far as 5th. Edwards was rolling along till the car got loose and the #17 of Chance Adkins hit the wall on the front stretch sending sparks flying. The #89 of Dave Mader III took the point on lap 8 and never looked back. The #51 of Perry Patino had a poor qualifying effort but made up for it during the race finding the #2 spot by lap 8. Lap 13 saw the #18 of Edwards tag the wall coming off turn 2 to end his night. The #88 of Roger Reuse put on a show for the fans as he worked his way from the #10 spot to achieve a podium finish. Due to time restraints the feature was cut to 25 laps

The first of the “Show me the Money” 50 lappers hit the track with the #24 of Christopher Tullis and #112 Augie Grill on the front row. Lap #2 saw the #22 of Jordan McCallum head to the pits with flat spotted tires from his spin in qualifying. #112 Augie Grill took command of the top spot with Tullis hanging right with the short track veteran. #43 Justin South was steadily working his way to the front as caution flew on lap 12 for Dalton Grindles #23 contact with the outside wall in turn 1. 7 cautions slowed the pace as 36 cars battled on the fast ½ mile track. Young gun Chandler Smith show his talent as he held the 3rd position till lap 8. Lap 28 was the opportunity for #24 Christopher Tullis to take his spot at the front of the field. Lap 39 saw a shuffle in the front running cars as #43 Justin South took the point and shuffled Grill back to 4th. #30 Bobby Knox worked his way to the third spot bringing #51Patino along.

Street Stocks are always a fan favorite at Montgomery Motor Speedway and this night was no exception. Charles Davis #6 had the car to beat as he motored from his 6th starting position to take the lead on lap 2 and never looked back. The scariest incident of the night happened on lap 9 when the #80 of Davey Lynn and the #88 of Bubba Nesbitt got together and sent Nesbitt straight into the turn 3 wall. The racecar was totaled but Bubba Nesbitt walked away a little sore but ok. The #12 of Josh Wilson had one of his best races at MMS as he got as high as 2nd place finishing his night in 4th. Due to time restraints the feature was cut to 20 laps

Modified Minis saw a new winner this week as a few cars returned to action after missing the first couple of races. The #21 car of Steve Looney and the #22 of David Davis started on the front row of the feature and held those spots till lap 4 when Chase Spradlin driving the #8 car moved into the 2 spot. Davis was controlling the field as he led flag to flag for his first victory of 2016. Due to time restraints the feature was cut to 15 laps

The second race looked more like Talladega than Montgomery Motor Speedway. With the top 8 redrawing for the second race it put first race winner Justin south in 7th position and the #30 of Bobby Knox and the #51 of Perry Patino on the front row. The Action was hot and heavy as a sense of urgency seemed to overtake the field. The first caution flew on lap 5 as the #22, #29 and #2 piled up in turn 4. Lap 9 saw the caution flag fly again for an incident on the front stretch involving the #27 of Austin Wood and the #95 of Warren Mobley. Lap 14 saw the “BIG ONE” as the #30 of Knox got sideways and collected almost ½ the field. With cars stacked on top of each other 82 wrecker did a great job of clearing the track and racing resumed. The decision was made at this point to cut the final feature to 30 laps. The yellow flag flew an additional 5 times before the race was finished as the battle came down to 2 short track stars the #18 of Casey Roderick and the # h2 of Bret Holmes. Both drivers had raced the night before with Roderick winning the Southern Super Series race at 5 flags Speedway and Bret Holmes scoring a top 10 finish in the ARCA race at Talladega. When the checkered flag fell it was Casey Roderick #18 taking the win in the second “Show me the Money” feature of the Night. Christopher Tullis #24 showed his strength by having 2 podium finishes for the evening. Sterling Marlin #114 worked his way from the rear of the field for a 6th place finish

Montgomery Motor Speedway will be back in action May 14th with Super Trucks racing for 50 laps and the Interstate batteries Late Model Sportsman competing for 64 laps in honor of MMS 64th year of operation. Street stocks will also be in action. “Show me the Money” pro late models will return to the track for Memorial weekend in a 100 lap shootout and a special 64 lap Street stock contest.
