October 31, 2015 Montgomery, Al: Montgomery Motor Speedway has always been known as one of the best oval tracks in the country. With a heritage dating back 63 years a new chapter was opened Saturday afternoon with the first running of a road course race at the historic speedway. The 8/10th mile layout was entertaining for the fans and challenging for the racers.
13 race teams showed early Saturday morning ready to attack the course filled with left and right turns, runs through the grass area and a Joker Jump on the pit road.
The event started with a Costume contest for the kids and a trick or trunk on the front stretch to hand out candy and give the fans the opportunity to see the road racing machines and drivers up close and personal. After the parade lap with kids riding in the cars, it was time for the 1.5 hour Enduro.
The starting grid had the #4 car of Brandon”LeDon” Vickers Sponsored by Shelby Concrete and the #01″General Lee” of John Thornton and Drew Carter leading the field to green. The action was wild and crazy from the start as the #4 car set a blistering pace. As people say in racing sometimes you have to race the track and this time the track won against the #4 as the only red flag of the event was displayed as Vickers found himself on top of the chicane coming out of turn 2 and the car suffered some suspension damage. With battles going on all over the track the drivers were having a blast. The #18 of Brad”Bad Brad” Edwards had a rear view mirror filled with the #88 of Stan “Sharkman” Narrison but the Big Pumpkin went up in smoke heading for the PATINO hairpin and had to retire early. Some teams only had 1 driver, most had 2 but the #901 brought 3 road course specialists led by Shawn “Felipes Dad” Wood along with Caleb Jackson and Cody Cousar. Steve “Cracker” McCain brought his ford out complete with a set of Cattle horns mounted to the roof. The ladies were represented well for this event as #1 Elizabeth “Trouble” Brickley sported her purple machine until transmission problems sent her to the pits. The #27 featured Josh Smiley” Stevens and Jerilyn Hester battling it out for the entire event. Some big names in short track racing were present and taking a shot at turning both left and right. The #2 car was piloted by John “Turtle” Bolen and Brandon “00” Curren along with The 2 Justins in the #10 car Justin”Ladasha” South and Justin “T.D. Harry” Elliot. Blake Ferguson and Nick Martin had a strong run ending up 4th overall at the conclusion of the 1.5 hour event as the team of Jeff “Mad Dog” Kunkler who drove a very strong second segment and Stan Narrison #88 rounded out the top 5. Modified Mini regular Heath Williams and Chase Couser brought their #82 machine home in 3rd.
As things shook out it was the #28 of Lee “Grave Digger” Hutchinson and # 10 of Justin South that took the point and swapped the lead multiple times. The crowd was on their feet as the 2 cars put on a show for them. In the end it was #28 H&R Towing Nissan Altima Driven by Lee Hutchinson in Victory Lane.
