August 2, 2015 Montgomery, Al : When the Late Model Sportsman division was introduced, The thought was that someone could buy an older chassis, Put together a motor and come race in a division that was not overburdened with rules. Running on an 8” tire, utilizing a 500 carburetor and weighing 3000 lbs.it has accomplished that goal. Saturdays race saw a Pro cup car, an old Stanley smith All Pro car some converted super late models and some equipment that had been sitting in barns for years all shined up and putting on a show for the fans. 16 cars rolled in for practice and a chance to take home a $1000 check and the hardware for the Sportsman Spectacular. Trouble in practice took a couple of competitors from the field as Joe Wilder #42made contact with the outside retaining wall to end his day and motor problems put the #1 car of Daniel Jacks on the trailer.
Budweiser Qualifying rolled off with the Modified Mini class first to hit the track. Chase Spradlin #75 returned to MMS and was fast time at 23.252. Joel Collier #71 was second at 23.660 and Rusty Alverson rounded out the top 3 with a time of 23.934
Street Stocks were up next as Joe Bethea Jr. was your Budweiser fast time pole award winner with a time of 22.848 Dwayne Wesenberg #31 was second at 23.188 and current points leader Chance Atkins #17 was third with a time of 23.217.
Interstate Batteries Late Model Sportsman were treated to the opportunity of 2 laps of qualifying but it only took 1 for #51 Perry Patino to lay down the fastest lap of the evening with a time of 21.160 followed closely by #18m Dave Mader III at 21.241 and Joe Hudson #40 at 21.420 4th position was filled by Jason Furrow #21 at 21.438 and rounding out the top 5 was Justin Caton #7 with a time of 21.483.
The drop of the green flag saw the #71 Joel Collier jump out to a quick lead. The Collier team has been snake bit all year and tonight was no exception as they started to fade by lap 2. The #21 of Steve Looney took the point and command of the race. The #22 of David Davis had mechanical issues and retired on lap 6. The top cars put on a great battle for the top spot. Collier regained the lead on lap 6 as the other top cars swapped spots. The #7 car of Rusty Alverson worked his way to the 2nd position as the #75 of Spradlin motored forward from his 7th starting spot. Ashley Bridgemon #2 had a very strong run going as she kept right in the fight till the last lap. The finish saw a very close battle as #75 chase Spradlin just edged in front of Rusty Alverson to capture the win.

The Street Stock division has seen some great racing this year and new cars testing the water at each race. This week a couple of cars hit the historic oval and gave the fans some new cars to cheer for. #44 Justin Evans from Jasper, Alabama in his Evans Welding, JR Industries, Advana Locksmith Pontiac Ventura and Zack Smith #25 Evans Welding, Today family Dentist, Chevy Nova came out to test against the local drivers. A driver change in the Smurfman Racing #12 machine saw Donnie Wilson behind the wheel.
Charles Davis #6 took the lead by lap 1 and held it for the first 3 circuits. Joe Bethea Jr. Quickly moved his way to the front from his 6th starting position. The #33 was on rails as he stretched his lead and the #17 car of Chance Atkins worked to catch him. The #31 of Wesenberg worked his way back to 3rd after falling back at the start. Lap 20 saw the yellow flag fly as #31 slowed for a flat tire. The race resumed with Bethea Jr. on the point #17 Atkins in second and Brian “Bubba” Hutchinson #38 in 3rd. Lap 28 saw #6 Charles Davis pass Hutchinson for the 3rd spot and gain a podium finish.

The feature event of the night was the 75 lap Interstate batteries Late model Sportsman and what a show it was. On the start the #40 of Joe Hudson took the lead as cars were scrambling for position behind him. The first caution flew right away as the #59 Reuse, #17 Joiner and #6 Jacks all ended up facing the wrong way in turn 1. On the restart Dave Mader III show the power of his racecar as he took the top spot. Behind Mader the action was fast and furious as battles ensued all around the track. The front cars settled into a rhythm as the laps rolled off. The #89 of Bobby Reuse showed that the outside groove was the place to be as he waged many battles from that position. Lap 13 saw the #21 of Jason Furrow visit pit road for a flat tire as his crew hurried to get him back in the action. Several skirmishes happened on the track as Nix #99, Cleckler #5, Bethea #121, Reuse #89 and others were all involved during the event. As the laps rolled on the #7 of Justin Caton stalked the veteran Mader while still trying to conserve his machine for the end. The #40 of Hudson ran in second till lap 26 and then went in to conserve mode also. Caton held the second spot from 26 to lap 55 when Perry Patino #51 took his shot at the leader. Patino was looking for his chance at #18 Mader when caution flew on lap 72 for an incedent between #121 Bethea Jr. and #89 Reuse. During the caution laps contact between the 2 lead cars sent the #51 into the pits with a flat tire. On the restart Joe Hudson tried to make a mo0ve on Mader#18 but could not pull it off. Bethea Jr. tagged the wall on the final lap as the race ended with Dave Mader III #18 in first, Joe Hudson #40 and Rookie Brad Edwards #18 in 3rd

Our next race is the Saturday of Speed August 15th featuring the Pro Late Models In the “Show me the Money” 100 …plus Modifieds of Mayhem tour 50 laps and the fan favorite Street Stocks battling for 50 laps… The night will also feature the Legends of Montgomery Motor Speedway race. This race, fans will witness some of the retired racers of MMS in a 10 lap shootout. Dwayne Middlebrook, Ricky Barber, Lamar Hodges plus more.
