Augie Grill Looking for Home Cooking as SSS Returns to Montgomery

Augie Grill is the unofficial ruler of Montgomery Motor Speedway (AL).  The Hayden, Alabama driver won the first two Southern Super Series races presented by Sunoco at the flat half-mile track in 2013.  Outside of the Southern Super Series, Grill has two World Classic wins at Montgomery and six Pro Late Model wins, which includes three Alabama 200 wins.

Grill enters this weekend’s Southern Super Series Yellowhammer 125 needing some of that magic to return to the No. 112 Grand American Race Car house ride.  Grill has been shut out of victory lane in 2014 and hopes that a return trip to Montgomery’s victory lane will happen this weekend.

“It’s not been because of a lack of effort,” said Grill.  “We ran well the last two times out down at Five Flags (FL) and at Mobile (AL).  We were closer to what we normally run like and that has us pumped up and ready for Montgomery.  Anything will be an improvement over the finish we had at the last Montgomery race.  That was just about the worse car I’ve ever had there.”

Back in May when the Southern Super Series visited the track, Grill struggled to a seventh place finish at Montgomery with a car that never really had touch with the leaders.  The team rebounded with a pair of top-five finishes on the Gulf Coast and Grill now sits third in the season long point standings.

The last race at Mobile could have gone a lot worse for Grill and his team, as they had to drop to the tail of the field before the start of the race to repair an exhaust problem.  The crew waited until the pace laps to avoid losing qualifying points for pulling out of impound.  Grill rebounded to finish third in that race.

“We actually gained points on Bubba that race which is a plus,” added Grill.  “We had a great race with him the night before at Five Flags.  We are gaining and getting closer.  It always seems to come like wild fire when we win so hopefully one will start a streak for us.”
